Against the Storm : bande-annonce

Survival city builder Against the Storm thunders into Early Access this November
Reclaim the wilderness for the glory of the Scorched Queen, but beware – her demands are many and her patience thin. Also – there’s a big storm

13 October 2022 – Hooded Horse and Eremite Games are pleased to share from Gamescom Asia’s press conference that post-apocalyptic city builder Against the Storm will be released into Steam Early Access and GOG on November 1. Build, expand, and survive in this unique rain-soaked dark fantasy setting where you must reclaim the wilderness and its resources for civilization, all the while trying to ward off never-ending storms and the Scorched Queen’s impatience.

You are the Viceroy – a leader charged by the Scorched Queen to reclaim the wilderness and exploit lost riches for the Smoldering City, civilization’s last bastion against the Blightstorm that destroyed the old world. Unlike most survival city builders where your focus is on one settlement, you must push out into any of the five biomes available at launch and establish multiple settlements across a hex-based world map.

Each potential site comes with its own bespoke challenges and local resources, and you will need to build a network of settlements with strong trade networks. Your diverse, fantasy-inspired population has needs, after all, and no single city can fully serve the complex needs of its citizens.

But even the most efficient resource network of all time cannot last forever. Players must meet the ever growing demands of the Scorched Queen or face her wrath, and if the Queen’s temper doesn’t get you, the Blightstorm eventually will. Its return is inevitable, and it forces everyone back behind the walls of the Smoldering City and the Queen’s protection.

This is where Against the Storm’s roguelite features kick in – even if you fail, there’s plenty you can take with you into the next run, whether that be experience, meta-resources, or upgrades. Perhaps this time, you won’t succumb so quickly. The Blightstorm reshapes the landscape between cycles so you’ll never do the same run twice, and there are endless options that add to replayability.

Key features

– Resource management – gather resources to build up your city, as well as meeting the needs of your citizens and the Scorched Queen herself.
– Multiple settlements – found multiple settlements via the world map, and set up trade routes between each city so that you can shuttle key resources between them
– Five different biomes – There are five different biomes for you to explore and tame, from royal woodland to the swamp-filled marshes.
– Diverse populations – a fantasy-fuelled roster of citizens that range from humans, to beavers, to harpies. Each type has their own specific needs, wants, and desires, and a good viceroy will try and please everyone, lest the Queen finds out about your incompetence.
– Epic replayability – multiple biomes, a large tech-tree, and countless events and random boons mean that no game will ever play the same twice. Not only that, but the Blightstorm itself will ensure that you’ll face a new world map to exploit every cycle.

Eremite Games has a solid history of pushing out updates every two weeks – with 27 to date – a tradition that will continue into the Steam Early Access run. The studio is initially considering an early access period of around six months, subject to change. There will be a new development roadmap for all the latest on the game’s progression. A press kit is available here. Against the Storm will retail for £17.99 / 19,99€ / $19.99 / ¥ 2480.
